Kashmir is known either for its beautiful landscapes and weather or for the culinary dishes served in the valley. For connoisseurs and people who have an inclination for trying something new for their taste buds, Kashmir is the right place. A variety of food is available and served in restaurants, food joints and residing places. Ethnic, continental food, Indian dishes, Mediterranean, Chinese and Italian are served to the delight of the travelers.

The most relished food in Kashmir for decades or may be even centuries is the Wazwan. With Mediterranean influence and spicy combinations, Wazwan is simply irresistible. The original treat that used to be prepared in the royal food courts hundreds of years ago, consisted of seven dishes prepared from lamb mutton. Today, Wazwan has accommodated some changes and the dishes have been increased to make a savoring treat.

Wazwan is a must on social occasions like wedding and engagement ceremonies. Special chefs, usually a group of six to eight, called Wazas, prepare the dishes to be served to the guests. Dishes are served with boiled rice. They include Kebab, Rista, Tabakhmaz, Rogan Josh, Korma, Dhaniphaul and Gushtaba.

Travelers can relish Wazwan in restaurants located in many parts of Kashmir. Some of the best restaurants are located in Srinagar city and particularly in Lal Chowk area. There is also a Food Street, but the food served there is not hygienic.

Fine restaurants located in Lal Chowk, serve a variety of cuisines – Indian, continental, Italian and Chinese. However, mutton dishes continue to attract travelers from all regions of the world. Besides Wazwan, barbecue and steaks served by smaller food joints are exotic. A lot many people believe that they are seriously addicted to these treats and that it is very hard to resist even a small temptation.

Select restaurants in Lal Chowk area serve delicious Chinese and Italian food, besides other cuisines. Confectionary, fast food and ice cream parlors are present in most localities of Srinagar. Pastries, rolls, burgers, pizzas, fried and barbecued fish can also be had in Kashmir.
