Kashmir provides very unique accommodation services, seldom found in other parts of the world. Besides hotels, tourist huts and guest houses, the houseboats located in some popular water bodies in Kashmir are very famous and a pleasure to stay in. Among these, luxury houseboats, with features no less than luxury hotel rooms, on the charming Dal Lake are very famous. It is actually the serene lake spread over miles and the beautiful rim that abounds the lake which makes it a wonderful place to check in.

Houseboats are made from hard wood with exquisite carved designs and elegant furniture. The rooms are placed in a singular line – one after the other – and feature living room, bed rooms, kitchen and bathrooms. These floating five-star rooms are the most sought among accommodations by tourists.

So far as furnishing is concerned, the floor is often covered with silk and woolen carpets, rugs and the walls are decorated with wall hangings. Elegant sofas, divans and wooden chairs further add to the classic ambience. Drapery features hand woven designs and beddings are also comfy. Bathrooms are often fitted with bath tubs and Jacuzzi and there is provision for hot and cold water.

There is a kitchen assistant, in fact an expert chef, who serves continental, certain European and Indian dishes apart from serving the culinary ethnic delights. Houseboats have their own Shikara or smaller boat ride services, which are at visitors’ disposal at all times.

Houseboats are mostly concentrated in Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and Jhelum River. The ones near Nehru Park are the most suitable and their tariffs are also higher than those located at other places. Tariffs are also higher in peak season, which generally starts from May and lasts till October.

Kashmir Travelport works in close coordination with the Houseboat Owners Association (recognized by J&K Govt.) to disseminate important information regarding availability and other services. The Association has its office near Tourist Reception Centre and is an autonomous body serving the affiliated houseboat owners of Kashmir.
